Catherine Pomeroy

(pronouns: She/Her/Hers) is a writer and child welfare attorney who lives in Chagrin Falls, Ohio with her husband and a constantly evolving array of cats and dogs. They are a blended family with four adult children who have landed in far flung places which are fun to go visit.

Over the span of a twenty-plus year legal career dedicated to the protection of children from abuse and neglect, Catherine has worked as a county prosecutor, guardian ad litem, and legal counsel for a child protective services agency. Catherine is a violinist with a local community orchestra and appreciates many genres of music, including bluegrass and roots music inspired by a family heritage in the Appalachian regions of southern Ohio. Catherine is an avid cyclist who is passionate about bicycle touring that has taken her on adventures all over the United States. She loves exploring new trails on her bike, relaxing with an intriguing novel and good glass of merlot, and keeping up with current events and social justice issues. Music, love of family and adventure inspire her writing. The Gulch Jumpers was her debut novel followed by Four and A Half Billion People.

The Gulch Jumpers

Ellie Sanders discovers a battered shoebox of handwritten song lyrics in the back of her bedroom closet. The hunt for the missing songwriter leads her to Ray, an elderly homeless man with a broken spirit. Fifty years earlier, Ray’s bluegrass band, the Gulch Jumpers, was on the verge of success when tragedy struck and he lost everything. Ray asks Ellie to take him on a desperate search to help him heal a fifty-year-old wound, a journey to the crossroads. Though dealing with her own ghosts, Ellie embarks with Ray on a journey into the world of bluegrass music and fifty-year-old race relations.

Along for the road trip is Ellie’s college friend, Brandy, a sullen and resentful heroin addict with her own secrets. Racial prejudice, legal hurdles, grief over lost children, and drug addiction converge as Ellie, Ray and Brandy discover the power of music, friendship, and hope.

Four and A Half Billion People

What would you sacrifice for family?

Jorie’s respectful life as “justa hairdresser” screeches to a halt when her eldest son, James, is accused of mowing down the mayor’s husband. It’s 1978 and the townsfolk are obsessed with James’ trial, convinced of his guilt. All they see is his pacing, counting, and obsession with a 200-mile bicycle tour he has no hope of riding. They don’t understand how he sees equations as colors, tastes emotions and smells sounds. But James has a secret, one he won’t tell, one worth going to jail for.

A handsome lawyer and a mysterious bicycle club come to the rescue as Jorie struggles to hold her family together through the courtroom drama. Numbers can’t always predict the result when secrets, lies and loyalty push the question of how far we will go to protect the ones we love.
