Write & Fight Workshop

Join us on April 13th, 2024 at Concordia University in Irvine, CA!

Featuring multiple black belts, national level competitors, and the Concordia University Judo Club - this full day workshop will get you hands-on experience and personalized writing insights. This small class will be limited to 15 individuals.

Brief Schedule:

-          Welcome and Check-In

-          Session 1: Fighting 101 –including physical demonstrations, visual clips, and discussion

-          Session 2: Interactive Try-It-Yourself –An opportunity to work in small groups, ask questions, and try out specific techniques*

-          Session 3: Writing Fight Scenes – How to execute a written fight scene for the purposes of storytelling

-          Lunch Break

-          Open Mat/Desk – unstructured time to write, brainstorm with other participants, solicit feedback from professional editors/authors, and/or continue to work with the martial artists

*Our experts have worked with individuals with a variety of different physical backgrounds, abilities, and limitations (from world champions, sorority groups to five-year-olds). As such, this session will be low-impact. Participation is voluntary but will require a waiver.

Optional - $50 Fight Scene Reenactment:

Martial artists will re-enact YOUR written fight scene and provide you with personalized feedback and suggestions in a dedicated 15-minute period during the afternoon’s Open Mat session.

Meet the Experts:

Dr. Nathan Meier

Nathan started judo in 2003 at Iowa State University under Grand Master Yong Chin Pak.  He has competed in over 40 tournaments at local, regional and national levels and served as coach for his collegiate team for 15 years.  He was promoted to 4th degree black belt in 2018.  At Concordia University Irvine, where he serves as Associate Professor of Kinesiology, he started a Judo program that has about 10-20 members.  In 2023, he took 5 athletes to compete at Collegiate Nationals in San Jose, CA.  

Nathan has also studied Hapkido, completing his 1st degree black belt, and Taekwondo, completing brown belt.  He spent a semester training at SunMoon University in Cheonan, South Korea, training with the collegiate judo team and participating in demonstrations and competition with the TooHon Demo Team.

Nathan’s experience with writing has only been for non-fiction, research focused work related to his field of Kinesiology. 


Molly Sturgis

Molly began judo in 2008 at Iowa State University and was promoted to black belt in 2012. She has trained at institutions across the country and world, including: Iowa State Judo, North Star Judo, Virgil’s Judo, and Kokushi Midwest Judo. She has competed up to the national level. Her specialty is technical demonstrations and loves when she can coach someone to an “ah-ha!” moment. Although her main combat sport is judo, she has also dabbled in boxing. 

As a writer, she’s published in poetry, short story, and technical papers. She routinely breaks down technical writing skills in The Semi-Sages of the Pages YouTube channel. Previously, she has led workshops and presentations centered around the topic of storytelling through fighting and is really excited for this full day, deep-dive workshop!
