One of the differences between a hybrid publisher and a vanity press is a strict query process. No Bad Books Press will not publish anyone's books.
We look for well-written books, with a speculative fiction element, strong character development and complex world-building. While we consider ourselves your partners through your writing and publishing journey, we do ask your stories to be finalized and through alpha and beta readers before querying.
But once you're ready, here's how to query us:
Please include a 2-page synopsis including the plot (even the ending), and the protagonists' arc.
Click here for some more information about writing a synopsis.
Please attach as a separate attachment in your email.
Please include the first 5,000 words of your work.
An approximation of your first 5,000 words is fine (don’t cut off a sentence or a paragraph). If the first 4,959 words are the end of a chapter, then 4959 words are fine. If the end of a paragraph is at 5,021 words, then that's fine.
If you wish to include 5,000 words in the middle of your story, then your story isn't starting in the correct place. Consider asking beta readers for input.
Please include as a separate attachment in your email.
Please include an approximate 500 word bio including publications and associations (and it’s ok if you don’t have these!).
You may include as an attachment or in the body of your email.
In the body of your email, please include the following:
Send to nobbpress@gmail.com
When we were in the query trenches, it was always stressful not to know who to address the email to. Please address to either or both Theresa Halvorsen and S. Faxon.
You'll receive a personalized note within 48 hours accepting your query. In that email, we'll include the approximate time we'll respond with our answer, whether it's a rejection or a request for further pages. We will respond to all queries -we've been in the trenches and we know it's painful not to have any answer.
